From enquiry to return

  1. Tell us your dates and needs

Enter your start date, end date and location. Choose XS, M, XL, Bus or “Not decided yet”. Add passenger and luggage needs where useful; this does not yet reserve a particular vehicle.

  2. Agree on handover or delivery

Have the place and time confirmed before travelling. For delivery, provide the exact address and a safe, permitted handover space. Delivery is charged separately from rent.

  3. Check the offer and vehicle

Agree on the total price and rental terms. At handover, check the vehicle’s condition and fuel level. An enquiry alone is not a confirmed booking.

  4. Plan the return in advance

Agree on the return location and time. Later collection is a separate service. If your rental period changes, discuss availability and terms with us in good time.

Distinguish the permit from the overnight fee

The municipal questions and answers describe electronic parking permission identified by the registration number; no paper permit needs to be displayed in the car. The municipality charges a one-off CHF 30 for initial registration. Regular overnight parking is not included in the resident permission: an additional CHF 40 per month is charged, payable half-yearly in advance. The municipality must be informed of a replacement vehicle or registration-number change. This is particularly relevant to rental cars because the permission must match the vehicle actually parked.

White zone, Hauptstrasse and parking meters

Under the parking ordinance, the general limit in the white zone is three hours from Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 7 pm. On Hauptstrasse, the blue zone has its specified one-hour rule from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 7 pm. Metered spaces have their own conditions. The municipal answers also explain that the ordinary resident permission does not cover Hauptstrasse or, generally, metered spaces; Hallenbad, Donnerbaum and Gründen are explicitly named exceptions. A vacant space anywhere in the municipality is therefore not automatically suitable for long-term parking under the same permit.

Visitor permits are also available for a month

The published parking ordinance provides visitor permits for half a day, a full day, individual weeks and a month. A month costs CHF 60, a full day CHF 5 and half a day CHF 2.50. For a stay of several weeks, the monthly option is therefore a specific municipal product, while shorter visits can be covered separately. Validity still depends on the permit and local signs.

Resident and employee permits are different products

The resident permit also costs CHF 60 per month or CHF 600 per year. The ordinance sets the employee permit at CHF 30 per month or CHF 300 per year. These categories should not be chosen simply by taking the lowest price: they cover different uses. Renting a vehicle does not automatically entitle you to park it with an employee permit. The requirements laid down for each category apply to the individual application.

A permit does not reserve a space

The ordinance expressly states that a parking permit gives no entitlement to a particular space. It allows parking only within its area of validity. Anyone who needs the car in the same place each day, for example during a work assignment, should account for this distinction. An agreed private space offers different availability from a municipal authorisation to park.

Driving to the Roman site

The operator lists P2, P3 and P4 for cars. Parking is chargeable, with payment by Twint, Parkingpay, Easypark or Swiss cash. Euro cash is not accepted. These signed visitor spaces are practical for a visit to the archaeological park, but do not establish a parking option for an entire monthly rental.

Construction notice for P1

As of 11 October 2026, the official access page states that P1 is closed. Its e-bike charging stations are also unavailable during the works. The current parking overview is therefore more useful than an older brochure still showing P1 as a visitor car park.

Public transport: Kaiseraugst and Stundeglas

The operator recommends the S1 to Kaiseraugst station, followed by about fifteen minutes on foot. The intended station is explicitly Kaiseraugst, not Salina Raurica. The visitor information also lists bus 81 from Basel Aeschenplatz or Liestal to Augst, Stundeglas. A walk is required from that stop too.

Allow for the final walk

The easy-language description notes that the walking routes from Kaiseraugst and Stundeglas rise steeply near the end. Visitors with pushchairs, walking aids or substantial luggage should account for the difference between a stop in the settlement and the museum entrance.

Saver Day Pass at the counter since August 2026

Since 1 August 2026, Giebenach municipality has sold the municipal Saver Day Pass in person at its counter. The official leaflet distinguishes two price levels; the cheaper advance period runs from six months to no later than ten days before travel. Purchase is possible until one day before travel at the latest. This lead time matters for a planned day outing: arriving at the counter on departure day does not meet the stated sales conditions. The municipal counter is at Schulgasse 20.

Line 72 to Liestal

TNW's AAGL information lists line 72 between Liestal, Bahnhof and Arisdorf, Weieren. During peak hours, services increase to every fifteen minutes. When heading for rail connections in Liestal, the direct bus can therefore be compared with driving and then finding parking. The higher frequency expressly applies to peak hours, not every time of day.

Zentrum car park and charging

The municipality documents two charging spaces at the Zentrum car park. Its notice about a technical change in August 2025 distinguishes them from the other spaces. The one-day closure mentioned then has ended and is not presented here as a current disruption. The information establishes the charging location, but not availability, current charging prices or permission to leave a rental car indefinitely. An ordinary parking space is therefore appropriate for regular parking, while the charging bays serve actual charging.

CHF 40 monthly for authorised overnight parking

The municipality requires a permit for regular overnight parking on public roads and car parks, including blue and white zones. The fee is CHF 40 per month, charged six months in advance. A permit gives no entitlement to an available or particular space. Municipal police accept registrations and cancellations by telephone or form.

Update the plate when changing rental cars

Frenkendorf issues no physical parking cards; checks use the vehicle registration number. The official form therefore expressly includes number-plate changes alongside registration and cancellation. If you receive a different car during a longer rental, update the permit details accordingly. A card behind the windscreen is not the control method here.

Walking from Dorfplatz

The official route to Schauenburgflue and onwards towards Gempen begins with public transport arrival at Frenkendorf Dorfplatz. The path climbs through the village and past Adlerhof. The rocky spur is expressly recommended only for people with a head for heights. This point-to-point walk suits arriving by bus without leaving a car at the mountain destination.

Register overnight parking and report changes

The municipality states a fee of CHF 40 per month for regular overnight parking on public roads or car parks, billed half-yearly in advance. Residents' services must be notified not only of new registrations but also cancellations, changes of vehicle keeper and number-plate changes. This is especially relevant when collecting or changing a rental car. The official bulletin of 5 June 2026 also reminds readers of overnight parking fees and reporting duties.

A direct connection to Liestal

TNW confirms that former line 75 has been incorporated into line 76. Füllinsdorf therefore gains a direct service to Liestal alongside a fifteen-minute frequency; the new terminus is Schnäggeberg. If older directions mention line 75, search for 76 in the current timetable. Individual Liestal journeys can thus be made by bus while the car stays in an authorised space.

Monthly rental and regular overnight parking

The city ordinance requires a parking permit when a vehicle is regularly left overnight on public land more than two days a week or for over 30 consecutive days. Resident permits are available to registered residents, excluding housing areas with car-free neighbourhood plans. The permit allows unrestricted parking in the white zone. A rental car does not replace this local permission. For longer stays, it is therefore sensible to plan accommodation and parking together.

Short visits to the old town

During managed hours, the maximum stay is 15 minutes at Postparkplatz and 90 minutes at the other municipal old-town spaces. Other designated parking options are therefore better suited to longer stays. The city explicitly distinguishes its own parking areas from those belonging to SBB, the canton and the hospital. A permit cannot simply be transferred between these facilities.

Changing at the station

SBB lists 77 P+Rail spaces and four accessible spaces at Emma Herwegh-Platz. Published prices are CHF 10 per day and CHF 80 per month. Cyclists can use the bicycle station with 498 spaces, direct access to platforms and round-the-clock entry by badge. The SBB page also provides an occupancy forecast; this describes average conditions and does not guarantee a free space.

Overnight parking costs CHF 50 per month

The municipality describes regular overnight parking on public land, including blue zones, as requiring a permit and payment. Residents without private parking can apply to Zentrale Dienste for a permit for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. The published fee is CHF 50 per month per vehicle, billed half-yearly. Users must declare this use themselves. The regulations also cover people given a vehicle to use, not only its registered keeper.

Distinguish station North and South

SBB lists two separate P+Rail facilities at the station: North and South. North has published prices of CHF 5 per day and CHF 50 per month. South also costs CHF 5 per day, but lists charging hours only from Monday to Friday, 7 am to 7 pm, and the P+Rail app as its sales channel. Your choice therefore affects charging hours and purchase arrangements. The municipal overnight permit is not equivalent to an SBB monthly pass.

An alternative way to reach the station

SBB also lists 74 covered bicycle spaces and 32 additional covered spaces for two-wheelers. A monthly rental car can therefore be used for luggage or changing destinations, while regular journeys to the station remain possible by bicycle.

Free spaces at the station

SBB lists ten car spaces and one accessible parking space at Itingen station. The station information describes them as municipally owned and free of charge. This documents a specific parking option when changing from car to train. The number is the stated capacity, not an indication of spaces available on arrival. SBB does not publish an occupancy forecast for this location.

Overnight parking also covers borrowed or rented vehicles

Under the regulations published on the municipal website, regularly parking vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes overnight on public roads and squares requires a permit. This covers not only vehicle keepers but also people given a vehicle to use, a distinction relevant to rentals. The permit does not guarantee a particular space. Official requirements, such as keeping areas clear for snow removal, still apply. Free station parking therefore does not establish blanket permission for regular overnight storage.

Reach the station by bicycle

For short feeder journeys, SBB also lists 26 covered bicycle spaces at the station. Anyone who needs a rental car only for occasional errands or journeys with luggage can thus use the train without driving to the station every day.

Municipal building spaces reserved for visitors

On 24 November 2025, the municipality announced that temporary replacement parking at the municipal building would end following completion of the cantonal road works. Since then, these spaces have been exclusively for visitors to the building. They are therefore not a generally offered parking solution for a rental car used over a longer period. According to the council's notice of 21 September 2026, an additional parking regulation was not being pursued for the time being; this does not grant general permission to park anywhere in the village.

Bus 72: distinguish direction and time of day

TNW's current timetable-change information describes more frequent route 72 services between Liestal Bahnhof and Arisdorf Weieren during peak hours. These additional trips serve Hersberg towards Liestal in the morning and towards Arisdorf in the evening. Commuters can take this direction-specific service into account. It does not mean that both directions have the same frequency throughout the day.

Visitor spaces serve a limited purpose

The official bulletin of December 2025 names three public car parks: Höhe, Friedhof and the area at Lampenberg station. Further parking is available at the multi-purpose hall and municipal administration. These areas serve visits to the cemetery or administration and short walks. They identify specific visitor destinations, rather than a general storage place for a vehicle that is rarely moved.

No private long-term parking in these areas

In the same notice, the municipal council asks residents to use their own parking areas and keep public spaces available. It expressly describes extended or permanent private parking there as contrary to their purpose and prohibited. Anyone living or working in Ramlinsburg for a month should therefore distinguish a space belonging to their accommodation or workplace from public visitor parking.

Bus services that may require booking

Route 93 connects Lampenberg Dorf via Ramlinsburg with Lausen Bahnhof Nord. Since the 2026 timetable change, the flexible Pick-e-Ride service has operated on every day of the week. There is also a fixed On-Time timetable for school and commuter travel from Monday to Friday. Planning therefore requires checking whether the desired journey is in the fixed timetable or needs to be booked as an on-demand trip.

Register overnight parking against the number plate

The municipal permit is issued for the registration number and covers motor vehicles and trailers. It is also required if a vehicle only partly occupies public land. Since the regulations took effect in 2024, the municipality states CHF 50 per month per vehicle; anyone becoming liable must register within 30 days. The actual number plate is therefore part of arranging parking for a longer rental.

Use buses and the Waldenburgerbahn

Bubendorf lists regional bus lines 70 and 71 and the Waldenburgerbahn between Liestal and Waldenburg as public transport options. The municipality points to Liestal for further train connections. Daily rail travel and occasional car journeys can therefore be organised differently. A Bubendorf parking permit does not authorise parking at Liestal station; the two locations need separate consideration.

When an overnight permit is required

Regular overnight parking of cars up to 3.5 tonnes on public roads and car parks requires authorisation. Regular means more than twice a week over a month. The rule also applies if the vehicle is only partly on public land. In addition to registered keepers, the regulations explicitly cover people to whom a car has been made available for use. A rental car can therefore fall within these rules.

Order, display clearly and keep access clear

According to the current municipal service page, the permit costs CHF 50 per month. State the number of months required when ordering; the permit and invoice arrive by post. Display the permit clearly behind the windscreen. It does not reserve a particular space. Instructions to clear roads, for example for snow clearance or parades, still apply. During a longer stay, therefore, someone must be able to move the vehicle if necessary, even after buying the permit. A private space at your accommodation where the entire car fits can reduce reliance on public parking.

Delivery, preparation and rental conditions

Plan your rental, delivery and return

Request delivery

Tell us your locality, preferred delivery address and rental start date. We confirm the time and extra charge in your offer. The listed places describe our delivery area, not a network of branches.

Choose a vehicle

Tell us your preferred vehicle type, dates and space requirements. Availability is checked individually and requires confirmation.

Compare the costs

Mileage is unlimited and all rental cars have TCS roadside assistance. Insurance, excess, deposit, delivery costs and total price are clarified in your individual offer before booking.

Handover and parking

Handover and return are agreed individually. Check the permits and rules for your actual parking space. The local information below helps with travel and orientation; it does not reserve parking.

How much is the excess?

The excess is CHF 1,000. An option to exclude the excess is available. Its price, eligibility and scope are confirmed in your individual offer; this does not imply blanket cover for every type of damage.

Is a deposit required?

No deposit is required for renters residing in Switzerland. For renters residing outside Switzerland, the deposit is CHF 500 or CHF 1,000, depending on the vehicle and individual offer.

What fuel level is required on return?

Return the vehicle with the same fuel level as when you collected it. Check and record the fuel level at handover.

When do I pay the rent?

Rent is payable in advance, before handover. For an ongoing monthly rental, the next payment is due before the next rental month begins. A credit card is not required. The payment method is agreed in your offer.

Which services are included?

Unlimited mileage, vehicle insurance under the agreed cover, vehicle taxes, routine maintenance, wear-related repairs and TCS assistance under the vehicle’s cover are included. A replacement vehicle may be provided subject to availability. The renter pays for fuel and operating fluids needed during use; delivery and collection are charged separately.

Who can drive, and can I travel abroad?

Rental is available from age 18 with a valid licence recognised in Switzerland for the appropriate category and an identity card or passport. Drivers must be named in the agreement or authorised in writing. The agreed driving territory is Switzerland. Travel abroad requires prior written permission; insurance, assistance and required documents must be clarified before crossing the border.

What are the rules for extensions and late returns?

The return location and deadline are in your agreement. Extensions must be agreed before expiry. An early return does not automatically reduce the agreed payment obligation. There is no surcharge for up to 15 minutes’ delay; from minute 16, the rules provide for CHF 50 per return. Additional rental days are charged at the daily rate agreed in advance. Report foreseeable delays immediately by phone; reporting alone does not authorise an extension.

What are the return and cleaning requirements?

Return the vehicle with all keys, documents and accessories. Condition, damage, mileage and fuel level are recorded at handover and return. Missing fuel is charged at actual cost. The rules provide for CHF 50 if interior cleaning is required, and documented costs for excessive dirt. The same cleaning work is not charged twice.

Which costs can arise after an accident?

Insurance cover and exclusions are set out in the agreement; blanket comprehensive cover is not promised. The excess is CHF 1,000 per covered event for which you are responsible, limited to attributable damage if lower. For an accident for which you are responsible, the rules also provide for a CHF 1,000 handling charge. You may demonstrate lower or no costs; mandatory rights to reduction are preserved and work already covered is not charged again. Excluding the excess does not automatically remove other charges. The option’s price and scope belong in your offer. Uninsured damage or justified insurer recourse may lead to further costs.

What do I do if the vehicle breaks down or is damaged?

Notify Mietkarren.ch immediately on 061 589 68 64. Coordinate towing and repairs with us or the relevant assistance provider. With a red warning light or safety-related defect, stop safely and do not continue if doing so could cause further damage or danger. Normal wear and previously documented damage are not charged.

What information helps us choose your vehicle?

Tell us your dates, number of passengers, luggage or cargo needs and any preference for automatic transmission. You can enquire about a small car, estate or van; a particular model or transmission requires our confirmation. For delivery, include the exact address and your preferred time.

What should I check in the offer before booking?

Prices start at CHF 399 for 30 days, with unlimited mileage. For the vehicle offered, have the total price, insurance, excess, deposit and payment method confirmed. Delivery adds the separately agreed charge. TCS roadside assistance does not replace these insurance details.

How should I prepare for vehicle handover?

Check existing damage, fuel or charge level and the agreed return arrangements together with the person handing over the vehicle. Record its condition in photographs and a handover report. Ask which documents and contacts to use if the car breaks down. These preparation tips do not replace your rental agreement.

What should I clarify about return, extensions or driving abroad?

Agree the return location, time and required fuel or charge level before the rental starts. Contact us before requesting an extension or change; it is not automatically guaranteed. Before crossing a border, check permitted countries and insurance cover. Clarify additional drivers and cancellation before booking too.

How these guides are prepared

Mietkarren.ch compiles this local information with AI assistance using the linked municipal, cantonal, transport and operator sources. These are not accounts of personal site visits. Sources and the date checked are shown for each place. Translations are based on the German version; place names and source titles remain in their original language.
