Rail connections through Oensingen

The Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn operates between the two places in its name. Oensingen is therefore the relevant interchange for public transport, while a car might be used for trips away from the rail corridor. Older municipal documents on residents' parking have been amended repeatedly; the archival material reviewed is therefore not used here to infer a current parking charge or present entitlement.

Neu-Falkenstein: the last 15 minutes on foot

The castle association describes access to Neu-Falkenstein ruins from St. Wolfgang: the path passes the Pintli restaurant and takes around 15 minutes. Arriving from Oensingen, turn towards Passwang in central Balsthal. Plan to reach St. Wolfgang and continue on foot; the ruins themselves are not listed as a destination directly accessible by car or as guaranteed parking.

Holderbank SO

Longer-term parking is regulated

The parking regulations published on the municipal website state that residents should generally park their vehicles on private land. Repeated longer-term parking on public land requires a permit. Residents without sufficient spaces and without scope to add more can apply for a parking space; the municipal council is responsible, and the municipal office provides information. The published regulations tie the permit to the driver or keeper and the registration number. For a rental vehicle, the actual number plate therefore matters too.

Between the Thal and Waldenburgertal

The official 2026 timetable for route 94 runs from Balsthal via Holderbank and Langenbruck to Waldenburg. Holderbank stops include Dorfplatz, Seblenhof and Steinbruch. For appointments and outings, this offers two different directions: towards the Thal via Balsthal or towards the connection at Waldenburg via Langenbruck. Choose the boarding stop according to the destination address rather than searching only by municipality. This bus connection can help with the return journey on a day trip.

Directly to the comb factory

The museum is at Kammpark 10. It identifies Kammfabrik, immediately beside the building on the Balsthal–Mümliswil–Passwang connection, as the bus stop and refers rail travellers to Oensingen. For a day visit, this allows comparison with changing at Balsthal onto PostAuto. The museum confirms parking for drivers. This is visitor parking at the museum, not a general parking option for an entire rental month.

Kätzlimatt: distinguish parking from the playing field

The museum asks coaches to drop passengers on Hauptstrasse and then use Kätzlimatt parking on Förstlenweg. Coaches should not cross the bridge directly in front of the museum. There is a related local distinction: the municipal regulations generally prohibit parking on the Kätzlimatt playing field, with exceptions organised by the responsible coordination office. For an event, use the designated parking area rather than the adjacent field.

Route 130 replaces the former route 115

PostAuto now operates the Balsthal–Mümliswil–Ramiswil connection as route 130. The timetable-change information describes a half-hourly weekday service, with hourly services at the beginning and end of the day and at weekends. Some journeys continue over the Passwang to Breitenbach and Laufen. For regular travel between Ramiswil and the Laufental, it is therefore important to select an actual through service; not every bus from Balsthal continues beyond Ramiswil.

Ramiswil Mühle as an excursion starting point

PostAuto identifies Ramiswil, Mühle on route 130 as the stop for the Pumpelpitz family trail. Mühle is therefore not merely a historic place name but an established public transport access point for an outing. It is also useful when arranging to meet: naming this stop is more precise than simply saying Ramiswil. This does not imply that vehicles may drive into the mill grounds.

Car-sharing meeting point by the school

The municipality identifies a signposted HitchHike car-sharing meeting point by Ramiswil school. Its second meeting point is at the Bank bus stop in Mümliswil. Anyone arranging a shared journey should therefore distinguish clearly between the two villages. The municipal page also mentions free parking within the municipality but does not identify it as suitable for leaving a car for months. A monthly space is therefore not guaranteed.

Distinguish school and sports parking

The municipality publishes a parking plan showing Mehrzweckhalle Kreuzacker, Pausenplatz/Gemeindekanzlei, Hockeyplatz and Enerholzstrasse/Untere Brühlmatt. These names help visitors find events. For Kindergarten St. Martin, the council explicitly decided in 2024 to reserve its two spaces for kindergarten teachers after others had been using them. Parking near schools should therefore not generally be treated as public visitor parking.

Routes into the Thal

The municipality identifies the Passwang as the connection to Schwarzbubenland and the Oberer Hauenstein as the route towards Basel. For combined train and bus journeys, it refers to the Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn and PostAuto. The precise event location therefore helps determine whether driving throughout or travelling via Balsthal is more practical.

Start at Dorfplatz

The nature park's digital themed trail «Discover Matzendorf» starts and finishes at Dorfplatz. The park identifies Matzendorf Schulen as the public transport stop. An overview board on Dorfplatz introduces the circuits, while smaller boards with QR codes provide waypoints along the routes. The Horngraben circuit is explicitly unsuitable for pushchairs. For families, choosing the right circuit therefore matters more than simply reaching the village. A charged smartphone is part of the recommended equipment.

Distinguish Brunnersberg from Mühle

The seasonal NaturparkBus stops at Matzendorf Brunnersberg on its mountain route from Balsthal to Güggel. The other route towards Herbetswil serves Matzendorf Mühle in the valley. These are different starting points for a walk. For 2026, the park lists operation on Sundays and public holidays from 3 April to 1 November. This seasonal service suits walks with different starting and finishing points.

Walking from Dorfplatz

The nature park identifies Dorfplatz as an access point to the Juraweg Thal. The described walk leads to Brunnersberg and on into the Guldental; the village shop is also at Dorfplatz. Starting here means there is no need to drive up to a mountain inn. For a point-to-point walk, include the return to your starting point in your route planning.

Seasonal bus to Güggel

For the 2026 season, the NaturparkBus runs from Balsthal via Höngen and Brunnersberg to Aedermannsdorf, Güggel, offering an alternative to driving up the mountain. It operates on Sundays and public holidays from 3 April to 1 November 2026, rather than as a daily commuter service. The operator states that capacity is limited and groups of ten or more must book at least two working days ahead. For subsequent years, consult the relevant seasonal timetable.

Walk without returning to a parked car

In 2026, the NaturparkBus serves Herbetswil Dorf, Wolfsschlucht, Mieschegg, Tannmatt and Brandberg, among other stops, on Sundays and public holidays from 3 April to 1 November. It enables walks with different starting and finishing points. The nature park lists the GA Travelcard and A-Welle and Libero season tickets as valid. Groups of ten or more must reserve at least two working days before travelling. These season dates apply specifically to 2026.

Hinter Brandberg: several driving approaches

The Hinter Brandberg mountain restaurant describes driving routes via Welschenrohr, Aedermannsdorf or Herbetswil. When planning a visit on the Jura ridge, enter the restaurant rather than just the valley village as your destination. The operator also identifies the NaturparkBus as an alternative on Sundays and public holidays.

Delivery, preparation and rental conditions

Plan your rental, delivery and return

Request delivery

Tell us your locality, preferred delivery address and rental start date. We confirm the time and extra charge in your offer. The listed places describe our delivery area, not a network of branches.

Choose a vehicle

Tell us your preferred vehicle type, dates and space requirements. Availability is checked individually and requires confirmation.

Compare the costs

Mileage is unlimited and all rental cars have TCS roadside assistance. Insurance, excess, deposit, delivery costs and total price are clarified in your individual offer before booking.

Handover and parking

Handover and return are agreed individually. Check the permits and rules for your actual parking space. The local information below helps with travel and orientation; it does not reserve parking.

How much is the excess?

The excess is CHF 1,000. An option to exclude the excess is available. Its price, eligibility and scope are confirmed in your individual offer; this does not imply blanket cover for every type of damage.

Is a deposit required?

No deposit is required for renters residing in Switzerland. For renters residing outside Switzerland, the deposit is CHF 500 or CHF 1,000, depending on the vehicle and individual offer.

What fuel level is required on return?

Return the vehicle with the same fuel level as when you collected it. Check and record the fuel level at handover.

When do I pay the rent?

Rent is payable in advance, before handover. For an ongoing monthly rental, the next payment is due before the next rental month begins. A credit card is not required. The payment method is agreed in your offer.

Which services are included?

Unlimited mileage, vehicle insurance under the agreed cover, vehicle taxes, routine maintenance, wear-related repairs and TCS assistance under the vehicle’s cover are included. A replacement vehicle may be provided subject to availability. The renter pays for fuel and operating fluids needed during use; delivery and collection are charged separately.

Who can drive, and can I travel abroad?

Rental is available from age 18 with a valid licence recognised in Switzerland for the appropriate category and an identity card or passport. Drivers must be named in the agreement or authorised in writing. The agreed driving territory is Switzerland. Travel abroad requires prior written permission; insurance, assistance and required documents must be clarified before crossing the border.

What are the rules for extensions and late returns?

The return location and deadline are in your agreement. Extensions must be agreed before expiry. An early return does not automatically reduce the agreed payment obligation. There is no surcharge for up to 15 minutes’ delay; from minute 16, the rules provide for CHF 50 per return. Additional rental days are charged at the daily rate agreed in advance. Report foreseeable delays immediately by phone; reporting alone does not authorise an extension.

What are the return and cleaning requirements?

Return the vehicle with all keys, documents and accessories. Condition, damage, mileage and fuel level are recorded at handover and return. Missing fuel is charged at actual cost. The rules provide for CHF 50 if interior cleaning is required, and documented costs for excessive dirt. The same cleaning work is not charged twice.

Which costs can arise after an accident?

Insurance cover and exclusions are set out in the agreement; blanket comprehensive cover is not promised. The excess is CHF 1,000 per covered event for which you are responsible, limited to attributable damage if lower. For an accident for which you are responsible, the rules also provide for a CHF 1,000 handling charge. You may demonstrate lower or no costs; mandatory rights to reduction are preserved and work already covered is not charged again. Excluding the excess does not automatically remove other charges. The option’s price and scope belong in your offer. Uninsured damage or justified insurer recourse may lead to further costs.

What do I do if the vehicle breaks down or is damaged?

Notify Mietkarren.ch immediately on 061 589 68 64. Coordinate towing and repairs with us or the relevant assistance provider. With a red warning light or safety-related defect, stop safely and do not continue if doing so could cause further damage or danger. Normal wear and previously documented damage are not charged.

What information helps us choose your vehicle?

Tell us your dates, number of passengers, luggage or cargo needs and any preference for automatic transmission. You can enquire about a small car, estate or van; a particular model or transmission requires our confirmation. For delivery, include the exact address and your preferred time.

What should I check in the offer before booking?

Prices start at CHF 399 for 30 days, with unlimited mileage. For the vehicle offered, have the total price, insurance, excess, deposit and payment method confirmed. Delivery adds the separately agreed charge. TCS roadside assistance does not replace these insurance details.

How should I prepare for vehicle handover?

Check existing damage, fuel or charge level and the agreed return arrangements together with the person handing over the vehicle. Record its condition in photographs and a handover report. Ask which documents and contacts to use if the car breaks down. These preparation tips do not replace your rental agreement.

What should I clarify about return, extensions or driving abroad?

Agree the return location, time and required fuel or charge level before the rental starts. Contact us before requesting an extension or change; it is not automatically guaranteed. Before crossing a border, check permitted countries and insurance cover. Clarify additional drivers and cancellation before booking too.
